| ......... . The Rock...,.................The most significant natural, historic and archaeological site in ............center town....... Now I don't know much about heritage conservation...or the ins and outs of archeology...or sitting on heritage boards....and advisory committees ...But I think I do know something important when I see it. ......Guess What I did, I asked a few of the heritage folk around here, about THE ROCK ,..... when I first arrived in Good Old Yarmouth Nova Scotia Canada .....4 years ago................Yes I am a ''Come From Away''...Thats what they call people who move here from outside,.....with me... they have now added quite a few extra ......adjectives..........Back to The Rock......So I did ask some of the Heritage folk about it they ranged from No Idea ...to Vague.....................Well my grand mother and grandfather told me about The Rock when I was seven or eight years old......I'll just give you a brief rundown........ Before the first settlers The Rock was surely used as a look out for hunting by the local tribes.........Col. Joseph Bond,who was an army surgeon During the American Revolution, built the famous Rock Cottage which has now ................Disappeared.............................During The War Of 1812.... Col Bond With his Own Funds Built a large wooden Blockhouse on The Rock... American prisoners, captured from privateers, were held in the out buildings..............To be fair at ten years old I knew it was a blockhouse and I knew the natives stood on top as a lookout and I knew it had shiny brass cannons............I wonder how many of the members of the Heritage committees and boards knew this before reading this web site..........Now...to the point.. When the local heritage committee choose the properties they wanted in the new proposed heritage conservation district..The Rock WAS Left Out.. along with other significant features, .....of course I have pointed this out on numerous occasions...... but these efforts were ignored......with no explanation.........although one member of a committee stated that the Rock was not included because ....''It Is On Private Property''...I can not even comment on that statement................Now to be fair a person can't know everything but when you are making decisions that affect the citizens in your Town....you should do this with the benefit of as much Knowledge about the matter as you can possibly find...It Is Your Obligation ............................................So You Should Ask Yourself can all those Heritage People be ...........Wrong and can this guy be..... .................................................and still the question ...WHY .... .... I believe that the answer is more important than we imagine........certainly it is more important than Conserving This Town Owned Historic Streetscape......The Cultural Landscape... The Collective Memories Of The People Of Yarmouth......Let's do some Interviews.... |
